Father of three killed in crash left home to buy maths book for child

Amirul Hafiz Omar, the delivery rider who tragically lost his life after a car allegedly driven by a drunk driver collided with his motorcycle in Klang yesterday, was on a simple errand - to buy a mathematics book for his eldest child.

“He had been planning to buy a mathematics book for our child for several days,” his wife, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, 32, told the New Straits Times.

“The last message I received from him was just before 11am, asking about some documents. I never imagined it would be the last time we spoke.”

The mother of three recalled the heart-wrenching moment a traffic police officer called to inform her of her husband’s death, and she had thought it was a scam.

“... But when he mentioned my husband's name, I immediately felt uneasy. He told me my husband had passed away, and at that moment, I just couldn't accept it. My heart was shattered," she said in tears.

Determined to seek justice, Nor Nadia has engaged a lawyer and is pursuing legal action.

"I want justice for my husband and my children. I don't want this case to just pass by. My family and I strongly hope for stricter punishment for drunk drivers to prevent such incidents from happening again.

"The current laws are not enough to make up for my husband's life," she added.

Nor Nadia also revealed that the couple’s children, aged between two and nine, do not understand that their father is no longer with them.

"My children think their father is sick; they don't understand yet. I have to be strong for them," she said.

Final moments

The victim's mother, Faridah Ahmad, 56, recalled her final moments with her son during a recent family gathering where the deceased had joked that his photo would appear in newspapers and on television.

“But we never expected that joke to become reality. Before we left, he hugged me and apologised for being too busy earning a living for the family.

"I told him it was okay, that I understood. But I never imagined that it would be our last meeting," she said.

Amirul, 33, was laid to rest last night at the Kampung Repoh Muslim Cemetery in Perak.

The driver, who crashed into him, has been remanded for four days for further investigations. Police said he had tested positive for both alcohol and drugs.
